Substance Dependence Counseling and Therapy
For many individuals, turning to substances in order to cope with difficult emotions can quickly turn into a substance use disorder. While it is incredibly difficult, acknowledging that you have an unhealthy reliance on substances is the first step toward recovery.
Signs and Symptoms of Substance Use
It is typically characterized by the prolonged use or misuse of substances including alcohol, or prescription or illicit drugs.
If you find yourself relying on these types of substances to cope with difficult emotions, big life changes, or to get through your daily routine, this can be an indication of addiction.
Some common signs and symptoms of substance abuse to look out for include:
- The inability to cut down on the frequency or amount of drugs or alcohol taken, even if you have the desire to stop
- A change in social habits, such as a sudden disinterest in or evasion from friends and family, or increased secrecy
- Neglecting obligations at home, at work, or within relationships
- A change in financial standing, including the need to borrow money or sell belongings without explanation
- Poor decision making, including an increase in risky behaviors without concern about repercussions
- An increased frequency in conflict including a higher occurrence of arguments or insubordination
- Physical changes, such as changes in complexion, sudden weight loss, bloodshot eyes, or poor hygiene
- Changes in sleep patterns, such as sleeping too much or too little
How Common Are Substance Dependence Disorders?
If you or a loved one are struggling with a substance use disorder, it’s important to remember that you’re not alone. In fact, substance abuse is incredibly common, affecting millions of individuals in the United States alone each year.
It is reported that 1 in 12 adults – more than 18 million people – has a dependency disorder. And of that group, more than 8 million of them also had a co-occurring mental illness.
