An Introduction to Ketamine Therapy for Depression
For decades, ketamine’s primary use has been as an anesthetic in hospitals. But in recent years, ketamine therapy has emerged as a breakthrough treatment for treatment-resistant (TRD) depression, proving to be both safe and effective when used under medical supervision.
If you’re suffering from depression that isn’t responding to other treatments, ketamine therapy could be the solution you’ve been looking for, and we’re thrilled to offer this groundbreaking treatment exclusively at our Westpark location.
What Is Spravato®?
Spravato® is the name of the esketamine nasal spray that is FDA-approved for treating depression. It is the only treatment type of its kind, and the only FDA-approved ketamine-based treatment for depression. It is commonly referred to under the broader name of “ketamine therapy”.
How Can Spravato® Ketamine Therapy Help Depression?
Clinical trials have demonstrated the effectiveness of Spravato® with the following key results:
- Rapid relief from depressive symptoms, with some patients experiencing improvement within just hours or days
- A greater reduction in depressive symptoms after four weeks compared to patients on the placebo
- Sustained improvement of depressive symptoms that lasts well beyond the end of a course of treatment
- Reduction in suicidal thoughts and behaviors
Is Ketamine Therapy Right For You?
If you’re an adult with major depressive disorder (MDD) who hasn’t had success with traditional treatments for depression, ketamine therapy may be the answer you’ve been looking for.
It’s important to note that ketamine therapy isn’t a first-line option treatment for depression.
It is only offered to adults (over 18) with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) – which is diagnosed if you try at least two oral antidepressant treatments without experiencing remission in your symptoms.
There are also a number of contraindications that prevent the use of Spravato®, which include:
- Uncontrolled hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Acute cardiac, liver, kidney, or respiratory conditions
- Pregnancy (or planned pregnancy)
- A history of psychosis, addiction, or substance abuse
- And more
Our practitioners will do a thorough examination and review your medical history in detail to ensure ketamine therapy is right for you.

How To Get Started with Ketamine Therapy in Ohio
1. Free Consultation
Contact us for a free consultation with one of our intake specialists, who will discuss your history to check your eligibility, explain a little more about what you can expect from treatment, and go over insurance plan criteria or other payment options.
2. In-depth consultation
You’ll then meet Dr. Neal Swartz, who will conduct a thorough evaluation, an in-depth review of your medical history, and answer all of your questions. If Dr. Swartz decides you are a candidate and you feel it is the right treatment for you, he will then create your personalized treatment plan.
3. Start your treatment
Spravato® treatments are conducted in a relaxing and comfortable environment in our Westpark clinic. As it’s a nasal spray, it’s an easy and accessible form of treatment that you will administer yourself, but under the supervision of a REACH healthcare provider who will then monitor you for at least two hours before you’ll be able to leave. Most side effects of the treatment are experienced immediately and dissipate within a few hours, which is why this is important. You won’t be able to drive or perform many other activities for the rest of the day, so will need to arrange for someone to drive you home.
4. Finally get relief from your depression
Many patients experience a reduction in their depressive symptoms within as little as 24 hours, which continues to improve over the course of the treatment. We always recommend combining your ketamine therapy with other continued forms of depression therapy, such as counselling, for the best results.
